AgeLab and Disruptive Demographics

Aging is a disruptive force in many countries and economies. However, global aging is not simply a story of ‘more.’ The new disruptive demographics of aging is not your grandfather's old age.
In 1900, life expectancy for much of the industrialized world was under 50. Today, living well into one's 70s, 80s and beyond can be expected. How will we spend and make the most of our 30-year longevity bonus?
These new demographics require a radical new view of the changing definition of "old age" and the impact upon society, business strategy and innovation.

But the events we attend at home, here in Nashville, are a sweet relief. What could be better than going to an action-packed event full of inspiring speakers who all live within a stones throw of us, and then getting home in time for dinner?
Needless to say we were thrilled to be invited to scribe a recent local event, Creativity Moves Nashville. Organized by Jacob Weiss, this half-day conference, held on May 24th, was devoted to connecting artists with causes and entrepreneurs.
Weiss exemplifies a compelling method for artists to lead creative lives full of meaning and success. The solution is simple: make your art relevant, and purposeful, by connecting with a nonprofit or an entrepreneur with a cause, and create impact in your community.

Today, Alphachimp's own Perrin Ireland, is the "artist in residence" at the The Nature Research Center, an 80,000-square-foot wing of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
The public is invited to a 24-hour grand opening celebration from 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20 through 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2012. This is the largest street party for Raleigh, North Carolina, expected to draw 50,000 nature-loving participants.
The NRC currently under construction, will bring research scientists and their work into the public eye, help demystify an often intimidating field of study, better prepare science educators and students, and inspire a new generation of young scientists.
The cornerstone of the NRC will be the SECU Daily Planet, an immersive, three-story multimedia space that will host live programming on current science issues and feature nature films on a giant screen. Other highlights include a 10,000-gallon aquarium with lionfish, bonnethead sharks and Atlantic stingrays, and Investigate Labs, where visitors can perform scientific experiments designed and led by Museum researchers and educators.

PopTech Climate Resilience Lab

Last week, PopTech brought together an amazing and diverse group of thinkers, stakeholders, and domain experts in Nairobi, Kenya for a Climate Resilience Lab. The three-day event was PopTech's first major convening around the issue of building resilience to climate change effects at the community level with a particular focus on identifying the roles of and opportunities for girls and women.

In early February, Alphachimp's Creative Director, Peter Durand, will be traveling to Kenya to participate in the PopTech Climate Resilience Lab.
For many of the world’s poorest communities, the adverse effects of climate change are no longer a future possibility; they are a present reality. The poverty, dislocation, health crises, resource conflicts, food scarcity and economic harm that climate change engenders threaten to undo many of the humanitarian gains of the past 30 years.
Vanderbilt Creative Practice Bootcamp at the Curb Center
/On Septermber 2nd, 2011, I went with Peter Durand and Perrin Ireland to The Curb Center at Vanderbilt University to support Peter as he offered a Creative Practice Bootcamp on graphic faciliation. I also had the honor of scribing for Parker Gates, designer and faciliator for the design studio at e+ CancerCare, located in Nashville, TN. And finally, I even got to sit in as a participant on a session by Eric Booth, teaching artist, actor, author, and international arts learning consultant, on Habits of Creative Problem Solving.
